The special interests have spoken. Last year's City Council asked Marc Ott to look at using the hotel taxes to offset the millions of money the City waives in fees to events. After all, Austin collected $70 million in hotel taxes.
Seems like a good idea right?
Not according to the special interests who Marc Ott caters to. In fact, the City Manager ignored City Council's request to look at hotel taxes to offset this cost--and instead suggested that the City start signing multi-year deals with these events.
Wait, what? Yes, that's right. Bill Oakey has uncovered this truly appalling action by Marc Ott. Marc Ott refused to look at the hotel taxes, and then is trying to get the City to change these deals from one year, deals to several years.
Read more at Bill's blog--and then please send City Council a clear message. We pay Marc Ott, not the special interests in this town. If the City is going to give away millions in waivers, then taking that money out of hotel taxes is a sensible solution.
