Letter from David Kig
Thanks to all of your calls and emails, the City Council indefinitely postponed the parkland parking ordinance at the June 6, 2013, Council meeting. That ordinance would have allowed businesses to use park parking lots at 93 parks throughout the City. The Austin Neighborhoods Council, Planning Commission, and Parks Board opposed the ordinance, and Council members received many calls and emails against it from neighborhoods across Austin.
Unfortunately, the Council passed a new resolution that directs the City manager to consider installing parking meters in Butler Shores Park Softball Fields parking lots for business use. The City manager will report back to the Council by August 8, 2013, on the costs, benefits, and requirements for a Chapter 26 hearing. This is a bad resolution because it will set a precedence for allowing businesses to use City park parking lots and installing parking meters at other City parks.
Please call and email the Parks & Recreation Board members and tell them to vote against this plan to install parking meters in Butler Shores Park Softball Fields parking lots.
