American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten visited with students at Reagan Early College High School Monday.
Kids in the program get both a diploma and an associate’s degree. The school is also a community school, which not only educates kids but involves their family in the process.
Weingarten listened to students' stories and touted community school legislation.
"When we say fix – don't close – neighborhood schools, do the strategy of engaging curriculum and having wrap-around services like community schools, that's ensuring that all kids can have a great education,” she said.
Reagan Early College High School was slated to close in 2008, but became a successful school once it started following the community schools model.
Weingarten is in town for SXSWedu.
