The turnaround begins with YOU on Thursday at 4 PM! Your participation is critically important for the future of urban rail in our city, and for transportation equity in our region.
City Council is scheduled to consider approving the Project Connect urban rail plan connecting Highland ACC with East Riverside Dr. If they approve this, it will pave the way for years of planning, engineering, and environmental studies on that weak and costly route. That plan may never receive FTA matching funds, and the city's strongest transit-, jobs-, and residentially dense corridor, Guadalupe-Lamar, will be put on the back burner for decades once again.
Please come down to city hall and sign up OPPOSED to Item 64at one of the kiosks in the lobby. You can visit city hall ANY TIME to do this between now and 4 PM on Thursday. If you do not wish to speak, you can still help support speakers by signing up.
A large showing can help redirect this planning effort. A council majority, 4 of its members, are currently seeking 2 seats on the new 10-1 council. They have been actively campaigning, and they need to see those same faces in the audience on Thursday. A strong showing will send a signal to all 10-1 council candidates, and to the media, that the pro-rail people of Austin are fed-up and we're serious about fixing this bad plan NOW. Regardless of the outcome, your participation will allow us to carry that mandate to the new council and shorten the time it takes to get this process pointed in the right direction.
Here is the posting, and please take note that it contains no reference to "Project Connect" while it contains highway projects amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars as a sweetener:
64. Approve the 2014 Austin Strategic Mobility Plan, which includes the identification of roadways of regional significance, and a locally preferred alternative for urban rail on a route from the East Riverside corridor through Downtown, the Capitol Complex, and the University of Texas to Highland/ACC.
Please forward this to all your groups. Let's make some noise and be heard!
Thank you so much for considering this request, and we hope to see you on Thursday!

Full Disclosure: As the editor of the North Austin Community Newsletter, I have decidedto add my name to the Our Rail press release which opposes staff's recommendations for this rail plan: Download Press Release Here
I made this decision based on the demographics (as presented by Our Rail) which reveals a serious and ongoing bias by Project Connect to ignore North and North Central transit needs.
