Nationwide Gray Panthers Organization and Coalition Allies:
Gray Panthers have been working since the beginning of our movement to strengthen Social Security and to oppose those who would undermine it. Its not surprising -- but it does make me angry -- that there are members in the House of the new 114th Congress who are trying to sabotage the Social Security disability program. Gray Panthers, we must continue to fight back!
According to its actuaries, the Social Security Disability Trust Fund will be unable to pay full disability benefits starting as early as 2016. Congress has reallocated funds between the Social Security and Disability Trust funds 11 times before, in both directions, to manage the financing of the Social Security Disability Trust Fund. However, during the first week of January, House Republicans adopted a new rule that would forbid the transfer of funds between Social Security accounts known as "re-allocation".
This new rule mandates a 20% cut in benefits to disabled workers unless legislation is passed that either cuts Social Security retirement benefits or raises taxes. This is an irresponsible rule that would attempt to play retirees against persons with disabilities. It's a new version of the old game of divide and conquer that was used to try to divide young people against older retirees to justify privatizing Social Security. For more information on this divisive policy click HERE to read "The Right Tries (and Fails) to Justify Its Assault on Social Security" published in Common Dreams.
Dan Adcock, Policy Director of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, advises that you call your U.S. Representative. If you're not sure who that is, click HERE to get his/her name. Then call the U.S. Capitol switchboard:
1. A new House rule that would block the routine allocation of funds from the Social Security Trust Fund to the Social Security Disability Fund and would either require 20% cuts to persons on disability or make cuts in Security Security Retirement benefits is just WRONG!
It divides retirees against persons with disabilities.
2. Gray Panthers supports a "clean allocation" -- a direct transfer of funds from one Social Security account to another without conditions placed upon it.
3. Instead of cutting benefits, Gray Panthers urges that Congress lift the cap of income that is subject to Social Security payroll taxes. Just like with Medicare, higher income Americans need to pay their fair share into the Social Security system.
PLEASE forward this to Gray Panthers activist friends.Let Jan BenDor (734-484-1744) or myself (248-549-5170) know your response from your Representative.
Together, we can do great things,
