North Austin YMCA Youth & Family Director Eleanor Earnhart recently shared a story showing the impact the community plots of the North Austin community garden supported by her organization on the North Austin Y's Facebook page:
"Part of my job is supporting our community garden, and a few weeks ago I was helping with a plant sale fundraiser for the garden. It's a fun event, where you get to help answer questions about the plants, give advice to new gardeners, and hear gardening stories from a mix of different people.
As one woman was checking out with her plants, she asked where the funds go. When I told her that they support the community garden, she said, "Oh good!" and then told me her story:
Last year, she became very ill and was in the hospital for an extended amount of time. As a result, she lost her job and was having a very hard time making ends meet. She would go out to the community garden and harvest food from the community plots outside the fence (the plots outside the fence are available for anyone to harvest from, and they are maintained by the kid's gardening classes that I teach!). She was able to supplement her diet with free, organic vegetables while she was working toward becoming healthy again and getting back on her feet. She said she was very thankful for that.
I'm very thankful that we were able to support her! It makes me very proud to know that our work makes such an impact.
If you would like to support our work, please consider giving to the YMCA's Annual Campaign. Every cent you give goes straight back to supporting the community through programs like Membership For All, our children's gardening classes, and many others. (...) Thanks for your support!"
