Thank you for loving and supporting our community!

The City of Austin Art in Public Places Program has commissioned Lucy Begg and Robert Gay of Thoughtbarn (www.thoughtbarn.us) to design and implement a community garden at the new North Austin Community Recreation Center, located at 1000 W. Rundberg Lane. During the course of the project, the artists will work extensively with the local community, through workshops and public events, to develop the design of the garden, establish a governing body and bylaws, and plan a celebratory event once the garden is completed.

The goals of this public art project were created in partnership with the YMCA of Austin, the City of Austin Sustainable Urban Agriculture and Community Garden Program and the Sustainable Food Center.  They include:

  • Integrating the perspective of an artist in the design and cultivation of a community garden.
  • Creating a gathering space maintained and enjoyed by diverse neighbors, which engenders stewardship and a shared sense of pride in community.
  • Producing a functioning and sustainable garden that yields fresh produce for the community.
  • Opening the artistic process to the community through  workshops and public events.
  • Reflecting on the concept of health for “mind, spirit, and body” through innovative expressions of visual art in a garden setting.
This June, the North Austin Community Garden will participate in the first-ever NXNA Garden Tour. The tour (Saturday, June 1, 2013) will feature 13 private gardens, 5 school gardens and 1 community garden. On Sunday, June 2, the North Austin Community Recreation Center will host a series of talks and exhibitors about gardening. Come and visit us there and get a sneak peak of the garden design! For more info about the tour, visit www.lovenorthaustin.com.

The artists have created a website to track the progress of the project: http://nacgarden.tumblr.com/. Visit their site to learn about opportunities to get involved in the creation of the garden!

I live in North Quail Hollow - one of several subdivisions that are part of the Gracywoods Neighborhood Association.  What I love about my neighborhood is the character. There is a definite cottage look going, with lots of gardens and interesting plantings.
