Benefiting North Austin Schools! Kick off your summer with a event that is truly North Austin - and help our schools at the same time! There will be 19 gardens on the NXNA Garden Tour, Saturday, June 1. This is your chance to see, up close, 13 private home gardens, 5 school gardens and a community garden, all across North Austin, the hidden gem of Austin. From exotic succulent and cactus collections to funky chicken coops, classic Texas hide-aways, and a "Keep Austin Weird" gem that will blow your mind... this tour has it all. The tour is a new annual event for North Austin to promote the livability and beauty of our neighborhoods and the vibrancy of our schools. Garden Tour – June 1 Garden Talks & Photography Exhibit – June 2 at North Austin YMCA Recreation Center The North Austin YMCA Recreation Center is located at 1000 West Rundberg Lane near the intersection of North Lamar. This new 36,000-square-foot facility boasts a state-of-the-art health and wellness center, open-access community spaces, child watch center, gymnasium, indoor pools and a site for a future community garden. The City of Austin Art in Public Places Program has commissioned Lucy Begg and Robert Gay of Thoughtbarn (www.thoughtbarn.us) to design and implement a community garden at the new North Austin Community Recreation Center, located at 1000 W. Rundberg Lane. During the course of the project, the artists will work extensively with the local community, through workshops and public events, to develop the design of the garden, establish a governing body and bylaws, and plan a celebratory event once the garden is completed. The goals of this public art project were created in partnership with the YMCA of Austin, the City of Austin Sustainable Urban Agriculture and Community Garden Program and the Sustainable Food Center.
